It
all began in 1971 with the completion of the original
Kunduchi Beach Hotel built by Tanzania Tourist Corporation.
The Hotel was opened by the then Minister of Tourism,
Hon. George Kahama, and managed for some years by Hallmark
Hotels from the United Kingdom. It was not long before
it became recognized as one of the 100 best hotels in
the World.
The
running of the hotel was later taken over by Tanzania
Tourist Corporation. However, during the 1980's massive
beach erosion threatened the Kunduchi coastline as well
as the hotel's very foundations and in spite of consulting
with many different experts the government failed to
arrest the erosion.
Around the same time the privatization process had
started and the hotel was offered for sale. Unfortunately
the first buyers, a Kenyan company, walked out forfeiting
their 10% deposit when they came to realize the full
extend of the erosion problem.
Once
again the Kunduchi Beach Hotel was put out on tender
and the successful bidders, The Wellworth Hotels and
Resorts, acquired it in 1997 and started the beach reclamation
process in 1999. This, together with the assistance
of a number of experts from the University of Dar es
Salaam and around the world, took three and a half years
and a cost of 4.5 million US$.
After the reclamation of the land the hotel itself
has undergone major renovation which took Two years
for the completion and a total project cost of 21 million
US$.
After
this extensive renovation and reclamation the Wellworth
Group of Hotels now present the old elegant hotel to
our guests in a golden platter regaining all its old
Charm and Beauty, now stand along the coast of Kunduchi.
The Great Hotel of one time!!!!
